Rocks SEEN 2001 Reggae Fest @ Berkeley, California's historic People's Park. Berkeley, California's People's Park has been the site of many historic and news worthy events in the past, some not as pleasant as the others. From the political police-students clashes in the 60's, the flower child hippie days of the early 70's, the volleyball court/parking lot police University student's clash of the 80's and the homeless situation of the 90's. Today however, People's Park has taken on what many consider to be a "new and improved" look. with an abundance of "things to do". park programs and activities catering to everyone from students to children and senior citizens. many cultural arts & music events also have also become a major part of the park's landscape. one of the more major and popular events held there over the past years has been The SEEN Festival; an annual free reggae worldbeat benefit music festival aiding battered women and homeless & displaced families that has been, according to the locals "going strong" since 1997. In actuality for the sixth year in a row (first show held Aug.1996) in Oakland ) Fox Ingram Enterprise and the SEEN Music Series staged once again, a fantastic reggae festival that brought the bay area reggae music massive out in droves for an afternoon of reggae and worldbeat music and fun under the sun. produced by Oakland festival/concert promoters; Tyrone Ingram and Walter S. Fox III, in it's short history The SEEN Fest has featured some of the best international and bay area reggae worldbeat acts in the world. this year was no exception as the duo brought in a cornucopia of some of the hottest acts to ever perform on People's Park stage in a long, long time. Opening the show was Oakland's well traveled African Storyteller-Folk singer; Ali Ibn Musa who to the delight of those in attendance, did a few selections from his current CD release entitled: "Free Black Ink". This gentleman's unique style of storytelling caught the crowds attention right away and prepared them for things to come from the SEEN 2001 stage. The afternoon's entertainment lineup included sizzling hot Canadian reggae dancehall sensation and featured attraction; Major P. who simply rocked the People's Park crowd with many of his " high-energy" hit songs including; "Mama" as well as songs from his third and current CD release entitled; "Prodigy; The Gifted One". A Jamaican native (White Hall Ave. area) now a resident of Canada (since 1982), Major P. who has shared the stage with and/or opened for the likes of: Freddie McGregor, Bounty Killer, Lady Saw, Bunny Wailer ,Capleton and many other reggae greats of Jamaica and had been wading in the shadows of some of Jamaica's best since 1982 until in 1992 when he was nominated for "best newcomer and "record of the year" @ The 8th Annual Reggae Music Awards where he had also performed with Tinga Stewart and Lt. Stitchie and then again in 1994 @ The Canadian Reggae Music Awards where he was also crowned "Crowned King of Reggae". yes indeed, this "super-DJ" has taken off. Currently on a west coast-Canadian tour he recently flew into Oakland just days before the SEEN Fest and occasionally flies back and forth between here and The Monterey bay area and Toronto and is hoping to return to the bay area and then to the east coast for more future performances. " We are very excited about working with Major P and his backing band (Locomotive) and are looking forward to a long-term work relationship and are currently looking @ Maritime Hall, Slim's and The Catalyst as possible sites for future showcases...hopefully, before the end of the year ....he and all of our artists are available for booking ya know!" exclaimed jubilant festival promoter; Tyrone S. Ingram who also manages and promote several bay area reggae artist & personalities including; Obeyjah whos debut CD; "Let Jah Rise" was recorded in Jamaica @ Bob Marley's Tuff Gong Studios and is making waves here on the west coast. Another artist managed by Ingram The Incredible Sly Fox who wowwed the SEEN Fest crowd with his very conscious and spiritually smooth roots reggae vocals that had a light twist of R&B. along with another reggae artist on the rise; Oonka Symeon who is featured on many a artist's project around the bay including DJ Collage, Bas Bombing Soundz, Jeremy Mage, Aladdin, Pam Pam and Poopa T joined Sly Fox on stage with his very cool baritone in a medley of rootsy tunes as well as a spirited rendition of The Incredible Sly Fox's current single; "This is the time". where he was also joined on stage by world soul singer Geo who earlier in the day, did an ol skool soul tune that had the ladies swoonin "they all were totally awesome!" shouted a group of female festival goers who said that they were attending their 3rd. SEEN Festival @ People's Park. Another dynamic entertainer who had the crowd of approx. 2500+ up and dancing was Haitian worldbeat artist; Wawa Sylvestre' & The Oneness Kingdom Band. Wawa, who was on crutches (recovering from knee surgery), was simply phenomenal on stage and on the djembe drums. his hard driving Afro-Haitian world dance style was certainly a sound to be reckoned with. Likewise can be said about his current CD release; "Oneness" which is climbing the world music charts and is currently available @ several bay area record stores including Amoeba's records in Berkeley. going on before Wawa, was bay area veteran blues songstress: Victoria Fox who in the past has worked with the likes of The Rev. James Cleveland and Brenda Vaughn. Fox strutted her stuff with some of her sassy "Fremont blues" that brought roars from the crowd SEEN 2001 also marked MS Fox's second SEEN Fest appearance, the other was SEEN 99. Another veteran bay area reggae music veteran: Ras I-Word, who had the ever growing-crowd abuzz and gave an electrifying performance in this also, his second SEEN Fest appearance. Renowned bay area spoken word artist: Joy Holland recited a nice 10 minute piece ala Mutabaruka. Holland is making a lot of headway here in the bay area with her "one woman show" coming later this month (Aug. 25th.) to The Black Reperatory Theater in Berkeley. showing a lot of support this year was Oakland California's Soulbeat TV's KSBT ch. 27 also came out and showed plenty of support. in the past Soulbeat TV has proven to be very supportive of community events. Popular Soulbeat news anchor and veteran reggae music events MC: Joan Savoury ("Newsbeat") also MC-ing her second SEEN in a row. widely known as a TV personality on Oakland's KSBT ch. 27, Savoury has also done her share of reggae music promotions over the years, working with the likes of; Frankie Paul , Edi Fitzroy and Everton Blender just to name a few. "Joan did a great job and I would love it if she (or someone of her professional caliber) were to do it on a permanent basis, we're on an upswing of sorts" explained the very optomistic Ingram who was on hand to acknowlege the many TV personalities on board from the popular and growing Oakland based TV network. also appearing was Al Ballard (host of: Soul Showcase) and the equally popular "Nightdawg" along with female soul singer: J. J. Johnson who sang a few solid cuts from her Internet released CD entitled*. SEEN Fest's co-MC was none other than Oakland's own Sweet Chocolate who is enjoying the success of her debut CD release: "No Foolish Mon" and latest single; "roll yu bum" this "reggae dancehall diva" volunteered her time moderating the canned foods drive and raffle that was held to benefit battered women & displaced families of the bay area....oh, and might I add, ..they were some very nice items indeed. The days festivities were somewhat marred by some of the worst sound engineers (and sound) in the world the sound system (Price Audio) need to really get their stuff together if they are to continue working this caliber and magnitude of such an event. simply horrible was perhaps the nicest words to describe these guys, never the less they got their chance . X-tra ps: as has been the case over the last few years while @ People's Park some of the People's Park's political bs once again got in the way as Featured and hot reggae acts like; Obeyjah, Area Leader, comedian: Nelson Martini and R&B singer Kevin Spicer did not get to perform because of the People's Park silly policy of no amplified sound after 5pm (just when then crowd was getting even bigger). " I am beginning to think that they are sending us a "get out" message, never the less, unless People's Park change some of their ridiculously out-dated policies, were afraid to say that we may not be coming back and will unfortunately cease to share the gem that is The SEEN Fest with People's Park and the City of Berkeley".... otherwise this was one of the years best in reggae....er...in any music for that matter. another successful show for Fox Ingram Enterprise and The SEEN Music Series "backers are still needed, but personally I still anxiously look forward to SEEN 2002 as well .....I look forward to next year's show, perhaps in Oakland....until then..... savor SEEN 2001!". Those were the final words of festival promoter Mr Ingram...... I could'nt have said it better. - have peace. - Samuel T. Ford Oakland, California NOTE ALL ARTISTS WHO WERE ON SEEN Fest ARE AVAILABLE FOR BOOKING!" please feel free to respond to this review @ seen2010@aol.com and please also visit our website: http://expage.com/oonkasymeon -or- http://maxpages.com/seen2000 or simply search; Fox Ingram Enterprise in the http://www.google.com or http://www.yahoo.com search engine SEEN 2002 is now booking (call or email for mailing address) for more info. contact: Fox Ingram Enterprise office ph.# (510) 383-2949 fax: (510) 632-3009 * J.J. Johnson "s CD info can be found by searching http://www.google.com search: J.J. Johnson R&B - have peace. - Samuel T. Ford Oakland, California SEEN 2000 REVIEW Seen 2000 - Berkeley, CA By Tyrone S. Ingram Saturday afternoon August 12th. was certainly a great music and fun filled day of reggae and worldbeat at The SEEN Music Series ' 5th annual summer festival, SEEN 2000 people's park. Mailing address and imformation below. please visit our site and sign our guestbook Fox Ingram Productions - The SEEN Music Series once again put on a very successful show. Concert Promoter Tyrone Ingram, along with Walter Fox III (the series co-founder(s), said that because of the growth of SEEN we are considering an even larger venue next year, perhaps in Oakland California with Woodminster Amphitheater or Mosswood park (where the series' first show was held) as options. The SEEN Music Series( SEEN ) debuted with it's first show in 1996 at Mosswood Park in Oakland, California and was later moved to People's Park, Berkeley in 1997 where an attendance of approx. 150 persons attending during the course of the day and approx. 25 pounds food & non-perisables were raised. Over the weekend however, close to 400 pounds of food & clothing were raised at this annual 4 hour event attendence was also up, with about 1100 "festival goers" in the park at one time and perhaps close to 2000 during the course of the day........a SEEN attendence record! Not bad for a show that last only four hours. Mr. Ingram and Mr. Fox has been independently funding and producing the event with no city funding or major commercial sponsorship, using their own money, and is hoping the city of Oakland will not only host next year's SEEN 2001 festival , but aid in the funding of this annual reggae worldbeat music series event that has been aiding persons and organizations that help impoverished & displaced families, the homeless, persons with chronic health problems and victims of spousal abuse. Square Meals Inc. of Berkeley, Harbor House of Oakland, The East Oakland Switchboard, Hamilton House of Berkeley and The Oakland Homeless Project are just a few of the people service programs that have benefitted from the music series "We are looking forward to incorperating more job opportunities and medical health resources into the midst of the music series program, foods, beverage, arts & crafts vending is also the direction that we would like to go, giving local small businesses the chance to vend at a major outdoor music event......an oakland site would assure us a 4000 plus or more attendence next year!" Saturday's line up consisted of some of the best up-and- coming and emerging reggae bands and artist in the San Francisco bay area; With sacred journey (maybe the hottest reggae band in the Bay Area) was joined on stage by local reggae singers Oonka Symeon, Sly Fox and Geo had the crowd up and dancing with a medley of really good sounding reggae, like Sacred Journey, these guys are going somewhere fast. Opening the show was san Francisco's flaming hot reggae group Red Di, who rocked the crowd at People's Park to the delight of everyone there and is certainly on the way to bigger and even greater things. Roots Mama Kwama the rootsy & soulful songstress from Nigeria who is just returning to the oakland area from a recent tour in japan joined Red Di on stage and wowwed the crowd. Red Di and Roots Mama Kwama has recently release cds. Oakland keyboardist Drusel White who has played with the likes of B.B King, The CHI-lites and Tyrone Davis left the crowds mouths agaped in awe of this talented gentleman's ability at the keys. "I have'nt seen someone play the keyboard that good in a longtime" Said Ibi Judah of Jah light Music who was emceeing his fourth SEEN Festival. Joan Savory host of Carajama and Soulbeat TV ch.27's "Island Beat" did a great job as guest Emcee next on came East Oakland's reggae hip hop artist; Sweet Chocolate who gave away t-shirts and CD's to the crowd of youngsters at the stage , is celebrating her recent cd release " No foolish mon!" As is san Francisco's singer/rapper Pam Pam who is actively involved in many of the equal justice programs around the bay area and often performs live at INS and Women's Rights Rallies got rave reviews over her single; "My Reality" which starting to get a lot of air-play in the area (KPOO, KPFA and Liberation Radio Berkeley 104.1 also appearing at SEEN 2000 FESTIVAL: West Oakland's keyboardist PROMISE who is also promoting a recent release the SEEN Music Series is here to stay!"
